Uncover Employee Potential: Creating True Alignment with the Kolbe A™, B™, & C™ Index

As the war for talent rages on, retaining and hiring top talent is becoming more important by the day. But what constitutes top talent?

Motivation, intelligence, skills, and aligned values frequently define ‘top talent’.  These are all crucial factors - but instinct must also be taken into account.  This is where the Kolbe System™ comes into play. It's a revolutionary proprietary analysis tool that uses empirical research to determine an individual's innate talents.

Many of my clients are familiar with the Kolbe A™ Index - the baseline for how you take action.  This is powerful in itself, but does not paint the full picture. Incorporating the Kolbe B™ and Kolbe C™ Indexes provides a deep understanding to some critical questions:

  • Are my employees using their instincts everyday?

  • Is my employees’ talent being wasted?

  • As a manager, how can I support my employees working more frequently in their instinct?

Lately, I have been meeting with many employees who have switched jobs to working with one of my clients.  I cannot tell you how many times I have heard phrases such as “wow, if my old employer only invested this much in me” or “I am so glad I have joined an organization who wants me to be myself”.

Let’s unpack more on the power that can be created when there is true alignment between the Kolbe A, B and C Index.

Kolbe A™ Index

Quick refresher: the Kolbe A™ Index measures a person's instincts.

It focuses on the Conative part of the mind that controls how you take action. This part of the brain is responsible for:

  • Instinct

  • Drive

  • Innate force

  • Necessity

  • Talents

  • Mental energy

All of my client engagements begin with teams taking the Kolbe A™ Index.  This is the foundation of my work; and the results are extraordinarily powerful.  Having a deep understanding of how you take action builds self-awareness, allows individuals to more effectively use their time and energy, and highlights where colleagues complement their work.

But the work cannot stop there, because we are missing two questions - am I actually using my instincts everyday?

Kolbe B™ Index

As a company, it's important to define roles clearly and communicate the expectations for each. However, when we take instinct into account - regardless of the paper job description, each person will bring their own talents to the position.  Checking into how each person is acting in their role is the essence of the Kolbe B™ Index.

Comparing the results of the Kolbe A™ and Kolbe B™ Index answer the question:

Is this employee working in their instinct?

When looking to retain talent, this is a purely objective measure.  If there is a strong disconnect between a Kolbe A™ and Kolbe B™ Index result, the employee is in strain.  This internal pull occurs when instincts pulls you one way; and your job pulls you another.  This will eat away at a person’s energy - leading to burnout, absenteeism or a change in position.

It's important to note that the results of Kolbe B™ Index will change as tasks and job requirements change. Therefore, it's best to include it in the periodic review process and use it when requirements or supervisors change.

Kolbe C™ Index

The Kolbe C™ Index determines how managers/supervisors believe a specific role should be performed. This can be used in the hiring or retaining of talent.

Comparing the results of the Kolbe A™ and Kolbe C™ Index answers the question:

Is my employee taking action the way I (as a manager) want them to?

When the Kolbe A™ and Kolbe C™ results are aligned, there is a harmonious relationship between manager and employee.  When there is a misalignment, tension is the result.  In this situation, the manager is spending a lot of time trying to get an employee to be someone that they aren’t.  This situation yields loss productivity, lower morale and frustration.

How do I Synthesize this Information?

Bringing together the Kolbe A™, B™, and C™ results demonstrate alignment on all fronts.  It tells us that the employee is working in their sweet-spot on a daily basis, and their supervisor believes this is the way a job should be done.
